Great domain names should be treasured

By Jaap Haagmans of Rely Websolutions

There's an enormous collection of unused domains on the net. There are thousands of .com names waiting for someone to start using them or, even worse, buy them. But they all have something in common: they have an owner who doesn't have or take the time to make something out of it. And that's a shame.

If you have domain names lying around, you probably have plans with them. You'll eventually want to use them for a project or maybe sell them. That's fine. But you can do more to increase the value of your domains.

The first step is creating some content for your domain. It should be related to the name or the website you're planning to put on it. You can use blog software like Wordpress and a free layout and have the website up and running within the first hour. After that you start adding content. Unique content is best, but you can, of course, always add material from any article directory that allows it to save time.

The next steps are entirely up to you. If you feel you've created a website which could grow with enough backlinks, start gathering backlinks. If you just want to see what happens that's fine too.

Now the question is: why would you want to do that? It's quite simple actually. Google, for example, values your website based on many criteria. Of course, backlinks count. But so does content and age. If, for any reason, you aren't able to really use the domain for years from now, the website will have already done some of the work for you. You might have some backlinks, but even if you don't, you will probably have a Google PR. That makes it easier to start a new website on the domain and, for example, trade links or find advertisers when you really start off.

The most important thing is that you shouldn't allow your domains lying around. Every domain has a potential value and it's such a shame to see great names just gathering dust.
